Spectroline is one of the worlds leaders in UV leak detection. One of Spectroline’s top performing HVAC/R product is their CoolSeal leak sealant, a method of repairing small refrigerant leaks using a simple additive. It also promises to safeguard systems from future leaks.
For both experienced HVAC/R technicans and business running the air conditioning system, refrigerant leaks are both expensive to repair and costly to recharge with the price of refrigerant increasing exorbitantly. HVAC/R leaks can take a while to find, let alone repair. Especially if the leak is very small or hidden from view of the engineer on site.
Leaking refrigerant costs money, damages the environment, increases its carbon footprint, and greatly reduces a system’s ability to run efficiently, reliability and life span.
The air conditioning system has to work harder because of reduced pressure and refrigerant levels. This ultimately means the air conditioning system has to work harder and use much more energy to maintain a effective output.
Problematic Leaks
Majority of HVAC/R service engineers recognise that there is a range of leaks that are much more problematic than others. While some leaks are easy to see and seal, some leaks are harder to detect, find and fix.
Service engineers, in some cases, will know that a real leak exists in the system from reduced pressure levels over time. Small leaks however like ones that discharge minute levels of refrigerant can be nearly impossible to find.
It is very frustrating spending an hour with a handheld detector combing HVAC/R systems for a leak you may never find, or spending an entire day covering the refrigerant lines in bubbles.
So what are the most problematic leaks, and what is the best way to deal with them fast and effectively?
A group of HVAC/R service engineers came up with a list of the most hated, annoying or difficult to find and fix refrigerant leaks. These included:
- Pinhole Leaks: tiny, microscopic, hairline cracks or leaks releasing very small traces of refrigerant. All very hard to locate.
- Intermittent Leaks: slow, sporadic, on/off leaks
- Hidden Leaks: leaks with concealed pipework that is not easy to access.
- Multiple Leaks: numerous leaks in the same system (fix one, find another somewhere else).
The smallest, most hidden or concealed leaks are usually the leaks that take engineers the most amount of time to repair. Typically though, finding these leaks in the first place can be the most time-consuming job
While large leaks are obvious and easy to find and fix because more refrigerant would be found by the handheld leak detector or any other similar method.
The Solution
Spectroline, however, formulated an entirely new type of leak sealant called Cool Seal, one of its makers says it is designed to fix all four of the examples engineers gave as the worst refrigerant leaks.
Spectroline and many equipment manufacturers highly recommend it as a preventative maintenance measure because it is formulated to safeguard the system against future leaks. The cost of CoolSeal pales in comparison to the cost of replacement refrigeration and once you own the injection kit the cost of a replacement cartridge is very low.
Composed of aliphatic hydrocarbon compounds, it is safe, no reactive, easy to use and non-polymer which meanest doesn’t harden when inside the system. The CoolSeal is injected into the low pressure service point using a EZ-Ject Kit. The CoolSeal will circulate harmlessly through the system.
If a break or leak does occur, the internal pressure within the system will cause the refrigerant and oil molecules to rush to the leak sit to removed. CoolSeal molecules will rush to the same leak site, but because its single, double and triple aliphatic compounds are much larger and longer than the other molecules they group together at the leak in a process known “flocculation”.
This build up, flocculation, of large complex molecules directly over the leak site will block and seal the leaks. Preventing smaller refrigerant or oil molecules from escaping.
CoolSeal is safe to use in all popular HVAC/R systems, including high-pressure R410A or R32 systems, and quickly seals the most problematic leaks up to 0.3mm in size in compressors, condensers, evaporators, O-rings, hoses, etc. Its very easy to use and because it doesn’t crystallise like other compounds it’s can be re used on the system at a later date if needed without damaging the system now or later.
Unlike polymer-based leak sealants, and one of the most important differences, CoolSeal doesn’t react with moisture or oxygen at the leak site which usually form a hard patch. CoolSeal is a completely polymer free and oil soluble formula. This means no chemical reactions are taking place so there is no hardening at all and no clogs.
Preventative Maintenance
If you allow Cool Seal to circulate a HVAC/R system then there is always a guard ready to fix any future leaks, making it one of the most ideal to use as a preventative measure. You probably won’t even know it’s work.
Even if the system is not leaking any refrigerant, Cool Seal can be safely added to the system solely as a preventative method for sealing leaks that haven’t happened yet. It can also be added with the system running or off, as long as the system as refrigerant and oil it can be injected at any time.
CoolSeal is a safe and easy to use in popular HVAC/R and quickly seals the most problematic leaks. It is available in three convenient sizes along with a first buy set up kit.
